    The Junior Fermentation Scientist will be part of a team supporting research and development and day-to-day operations of Colorifix’s proprietary processes, involving fermentation at the R+D facility in Norwich or the pilot scale site in Cambridge. As part of the Colorifix cross-site Fermentation Team this role will involve excellent communication of plans, results and tech transfer to colleagues across sites. The role requires a sound knowledge of fermentation processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous), high competency in aseptic technique and the handling and management of Class 1 genetically modified bacteria and yeast. The Junior Fermentation Scientist will also be responsible for the coordination of experiments using small scale fermenters. The position will require close working with other Divisions to coordinate fermentation derived work packages in active projects.

    Assigned tasks will include, preparation and characterisation of working/master cell banks and seed trains, all aspects of running a fermenter and data collection, underpinned with quality control measures. The Junior Fermentation Scientist will also contribute to the maintenance and efficient running of the fermentation suite, with good laboratory practice. The nature of the work will mean that from time to time this may include working over a weekend and with flexible hours and occasionally at Colorifix’s Norwich site.

  • Requirements
    • BSc in Biological sciences, bioprocess engineering or similar
    • A PhD in a Fermentation related activity OR 3-5 years relevant technical work experience in a microbiological laboratory environment
    • First-hand experience of running lab-scale fermenters (0.5 – 5L).
    • An excellent understanding of microbiology and working with aseptic technique.
    • Experience in the use of conventional laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifugation, microscope, spectrophotometer, pH meter).
    • Excellent communicator: report writing, presentations and verbal communication skills are a necessity.
    • Flexible team player that is committed to the success of the team as a whole.
    • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and continuously improve lab operations.
    • Good organizational skills. Practiced in timely data analysis and report writing.
    • Experience of working on multiple projects at once.
  • Desired
    • Experience of preparing master/working cell banks or seed trains.
    • Experience of running large scale fermenters (25-300L+)
    • Experience of the use of electronic lab books, attention to detail for record keeping
    • Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving.
    • Writing SOPs and implementing quality control measures
    • Working with quality control templates for data analysis
    • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
